claude mcp add is the Claude Code command that connects an MCP server, so Claude can call its tools from your terminal. This guide shows the exact command for a remote HTTP server with an API key header, how to check it worked, how to scope it to one project or share it with your team, and what you can do once Claude Code can post to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Facebook and Threads.
$ claude mcp add --transport http creatoros \
https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer cos_live_..."
|
v
~/.claude.json (or .mcp.json for --scope project)
|
v
claude > /mcp > creatoros: connected . 60+ tools
|
v
"post renders/final.mp4 to Reels, TikTok and Shorts at 6pm"The command
claude mcp add --transport http creatoros https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer cos_live_..."
--transport http: the server is remote, reached over streamable HTTP. (The other options arestdiofor local processes and the oldersse.)creatoros: the name you’ll see in/mcpand in tool names.- The URL is the hosted Creator OS MCP server.
--header: your workspace API key. Get it in Creator OS under Settings, API keys. It starts withcos_live_.
Check that it worked
claude mcp list # every configured server and its status
claude mcp get creatoros # details for one server
Inside a Claude Code session, type /mcp to see the server, its connection state and its tools. Then ask something harmless: “list my connected social accounts”.
Scopes: just you, this project, or the team
- Local (default): only you, only this project.
--scope user: you, in every project. Good for a personal brand you post from anywhere.--scope project: written to.mcp.jsonin the repo so teammates get it too. Don’t commit a real key: reference an environment variable instead, which Claude Code expands in.mcp.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"creatoros": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer ${CREATOROS_API_KEY}" }
}
}
}
Agencies: one API key is pinned to one workspace (one client’s socials). Add one server per client with different names, like creatoros-acme and creatoros-bakery, or keep one key per project folder.
Remove or replace it
claude mcp remove creatoros
Rotating your key in Creator OS invalidates the old one. Remove and add the server again with the new key.
What Claude Code can do once connected
Claude Code is especially good at social media work because it can see your files. A few things that work well:
- “Post
renders/final.mp4to Reels, TikTok and Shorts at 6pm with a caption tuned for each and this cover.” - “Read
content/week-41/and schedule everything in it, one post per day at 9am.” - “Turn
blog/launch.mdinto a LinkedIn post, an X thread and three Threads posts, and schedule them.” - “Pull last month’s analytics into
reports/september.csvand chart it.” - “Reply to unanswered comments from today. Show me the drafts first.”
You can also skip MCP and use the CLI directly. npx @creatoros/cli@latest init installs agent skills and writes a CLAUDE.md so Claude knows every command. See Claude Code for social media.
Troubleshooting
401 or “unauthorized”
The header is missing or the key was rotated. Check that it’s Authorization: Bearer cos_live_... with no extra quotes.
Server shows but no tools
Restart the Claude Code session after adding a server. Check /mcp again.
Want read only?
API keys have full access to their workspace. For a read-only agent, connect through sign-in (Claude’s custom connector flow) and pick read only. See the read-only access guide.
Other apps
The same server works in Claude (web and desktop), ChatGPT, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code and Codex. Setup for each is in the MCP docs, and there are platform guides for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, X, Threads and Facebook.
