TikTok Draft Upload API: Send Videos to Your TikTok Inbox

Upload videos to TikTok as drafts through an API or AI agent, then add a trending sound in the app and publish. How draft: true works and when to use it.

Creator OS · October 3, 2026 · 3 min read

The TikTok draft upload sends a video to your TikTok Creator Inbox instead of publishing it. You get a notification in the app, open the draft, add a trending sound, text or effects, and post it yourself. With Creator OS it is one flag, draft: true, from the API, the CLI, or an AI app like Claude through MCP. It is the best of both worlds: your AI does the editing, captioning and uploading, and you keep the final 30 seconds of human taste that TikTok rewards.

Why post TikToks as drafts

  • Trending sounds. TikTok’s API can’t attach a trending sound to a video. In the app you can. Drafts let you add one at the last second.
  • Business app privacy rules. Accounts connected through TikTok’s Business app can only publish videos as public directly. Drafts sidestep that: you pick the privacy in the app.
  • Disclosures set in the app. Some labels (like AI-generated content on Business photo posts) can only be set in the app. Send a draft and set them there.
  • Human review. For brands and clients who want a person to approve every post, the inbox is a free approval queue.

The flag

TikTok’s settings travel in the tiktok object of a post. TikTok requires a privacy level, comment, duet and stitch choices, and two consent flags on every post, drafts included:

POST /v1/posts
{
  "content": "The 3 prompts I use every morning #claude #ai",
  "media": ["med_..."],
  "platforms": [{ "platform": "tiktok", "account_id": "acc_..." }],
  "tiktok": {
    "draft": true,
    "privacy_level": "PUBLIC_TO_EVERYONE",
    "allow_comment": true,
    "allow_duet": false,
    "allow_stitch": false,
    "content_preview_confirmed": true,
    "express_consent_given": true
  }
}

Some settings are ignored on drafts because you finish them in the app: commercial music, location tags and the ads-only option. Full field list and code in three languages: post options.

From Claude

With the TikTok MCP server connected you don’t write any of that. Ask:

  • “Send this week’s 5 renders to my TikTok drafts with captions. I’ll add sounds tonight.”
  • “Post this to Reels and Shorts now, and send the same video to TikTok as a draft.”

The second prompt is the workflow we use most: the platforms that don’t need a sound go out automatically, and TikTok waits in the inbox.

Drafts vs direct posts

Draft (draft: true) Direct post
Goes live When you tap Post in the app Now or at the scheduled time
Trending sound Yes, added in the app Only baked into the file, or Commercial Music Library on Business accounts
Privacy choice In the app From the API (Business app: public only for video)
Fully hands-off No Yes

Tips

  • Drafts arrive in the Creator Inbox. Look for the notification.
  • Write the final caption before sending. You can edit it in the app, but it’s faster to get it right in the prompt.
  • Pick the cover in the app when you post the draft.
  • Plan a daily 10-minute “sound pass” to post the day’s drafts.

FAQ

Can I schedule a draft?

Yes: schedule the post and the draft is delivered to your inbox at that time. Publishing is then up to you.

Does it work for photo carousels?
