To repurpose YouTube videos into Shorts without Claude, cut the short clips yourself in any editor, then use a publishing tool to schedule and cross-post them to YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and X from one place. Claude is not part of that path. The editing happens by hand, and a scheduler handles the upload and distribution.

What does repurposing YouTube videos into Shorts without Claude actually mean
It means you keep the creative decisions and skip the prompting step. You watch your own long video, choose the moments worth clipping, and cut them in whatever editor you already know. Then a publishing tool sends the finished files to every platform.
There are two separate jobs in this workflow, and mixing them up is where people get stuck.
- Editing. Deciding which minute of the long video is worth 40 seconds, cutting it, reframing to vertical, adding captions if you want them.
- Publishing. Getting the file onto YouTube as a Short, onto Instagram as a Reel, onto TikTok, and onto X. Each platform has its own upload form and its own limits.
Claude, or any AI agent, can sit at either end of that. It can suggest clip timestamps, and it can drive the publishing step through the Creator OS MCP server. The middle, the actual cut, stays with you. If you would rather not prompt a model at all, you drop the first part and keep the second.
Creator OS is the publishing half. It publishes, schedules, replies and reads analytics on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Threads, Reddit, Discord, Slack and WhatsApp plus Skool, from the web app, the iOS app, the API, the CLI, or an AI app through the hosted MCP server. This guide covers only the parts you need for Shorts.
Can Claude make YouTube Shorts or does the editing still happen by hand
The editing still happens by hand, or in a video tool. Claude is a text and tool-calling model, and Creator OS does not ship its own model, so there is no button that turns a 20 minute video into five finished clips.
What an AI agent can do is pick moments worth clipping and describe the cut. You still open the file and make it. What it can also do is run the upload, and that part is genuinely automated. Creator OS ships a hosted MCP server at mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp, so an AI app can call about 160 tools, including create_post, upload_media_from_url, check_caption_length and get_best_time_to_post.
So the honest split looks like this:
| Job | What an AI agent can do | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Choose clips | Suggest timestamps and hooks from a transcript | Watch the video and agree or disagree |
| Cut and reframe | Nothing in Creator OS | Cut in your editor, export 1080×1920 |
| Write captions | Draft per platform, check lengths | Edit the voice so it sounds like you |
| Upload and schedule | Create the post across platforms | Approve it |
| Reply to comments | Draft or send replies, start DMs | Set the rules once |
If you want the full AI-assisted version of this pipeline, including the prompting side, the original walkthrough lives at repurpose a long YouTube video into Shorts with Claude. This post is the other path.
How to repurpose a long YouTube video into Shorts without Claude, step by step
Pick your clips from the transcript, not from scrolling the timeline. Reading is faster than scrubbing, and it forces you to notice which sentences actually land.
- Open the transcript. YouTube gives you one on the watch page. Scan for sentences that make a claim, a number or a mistake.
- Mark 3 to 5 windows. Aim for 20 to 50 seconds each. A Short has to be worth watching without context from the long video.
- Cut vertical. Any editor works. Frame the subject, keep captions large, and check the first two seconds carry the hook.
- Export MP4. 1080×1920 is the safe vertical size. Portrait video uploaded to YouTube becomes a Short automatically.
- Write one caption per platform. They are not the same. X counts characters differently than Instagram, and Threads caps a post at 500 characters.
- Upload the files once and reuse the media id. More on that below.
- Schedule the set. Stagger the Shorts across a week instead of dumping four on one morning.
One practical note on the cut: vertical clips that keep the original audio waveform on screen are hard to watch. Trim to the sentence boundaries, and if you cannot avoid a long pause, cut it out rather than speeding it up. You can hear a speed-up.
How to upload YouTube Shorts and keep the vertical format right
Upload the same file you cut for Instagram and TikTok. Creator OS applies YouTube’s own rules for you, and a vertical video under the Short threshold goes out as a Short.
A few things are worth knowing before you hit publish:
- YouTube Shorts do not take custom thumbnails through the API. Long-form videos do. Plan your cover frame in the edit instead.
- A first comment posts and pins on YouTube, up to 10,000 characters. That is a good place for the link to the full video.
- Title is capped at 100 characters, and
madeForKidsdefaults to false. - Visibility is public, private or unlisted. Use private for a final check on a phone before the scheduled time.
From the terminal, one Short to YouTube looks like this:
creatoros posts:create \
--text "Your first 3 seconds decide everything." \
--platforms youtube \
--media ./clips/hook-cut.mp4 \
--title "The first 3 seconds" \
--scheduledAt 2026-03-02T09:00:00Z \
--timezone America/Toronto
Before you commit, check the caption against every platform you plan to hit:
creatoros validate:post-length --text "Your caption goes here"
That one command saves the most common failure in a cross-post: a caption that fits Instagram and blows the X limit.
How to schedule and cross-post Shorts to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and X in one place
Upload the video once, get a media id, and reuse it on every platform in a single post. That is the whole trick to cross-posting Shorts without re-uploading four times.
creatoros media:upload ./clips/hook-cut.mp4
# returns something like med_8f2k...
Then create one post that targets all four platforms with the shared media id:
creatoros posts:create \
--text "Your first 3 seconds decide everything." \
--platforms youtube,instagram,tiktok,twitter \
--media med_8f2k... \
--scheduledAt 2026-03-02T09:00:00Z \
--timezone America/Toronto
If a platform in the list is not connected, it comes back in missing_platforms and the rest still go out. You are not blocked by one broken connection.
Each network has settings the simple form fills for you and the advanced form lets you control. The ones that matter for Shorts:
| Platform | What to watch for |
|---|---|
| YouTube | Vertical video becomes a Short. No custom thumbnail on Shorts. First comment pins. |
Reels need a Business or Creator account. The API cannot attach trending audio, so bake sound into the file. firstComment carries your link because captions are not clickable. |
|
| TikTok | Needs a privacy level and the consent flags, which the simple form sets. draft sends it to the TikTok Creator Inbox to finish in the app. |
| X | Standard accounts cap video at about 2 minutes 20 seconds. Threads of clips work via threadItems. |
Then read what happened, on the same day:
creatoros analytics:posts --platform youtube --sortBy engagement
creatoros analytics:best-time --platform tiktok
Comment replies work on all four of those platforms, and DMs work on Instagram and X. You can answer from the same inbox with creatoros inbox:comments and creatoros inbox:reply. For a keyword funnel that turns a comment into a DM, set up an automation once with creatoros automations:create, which works on Instagram and Facebook.

When the Claude method wins and when the manual Creator OS workflow wins
Use an AI agent when you have a long back catalog and no time to watch it. Use the manual path when you already know which moments matter, or when you do not want to prompt anything at all.
The Claude method wins when:
- You have 40 old videos and want candidate timestamps for each one.
- You want captions and hooks drafted in your voice before you edit.
- You are comfortable reviewing model output and disagreeing with it.
The manual Creator OS workflow wins when:
- You remember exactly which two minutes of last week’s video were good.
- You would rather spend 20 minutes cutting than 10 minutes writing a prompt and 30 minutes checking the answer.
- Your bottleneck is publishing and replies, not ideas. Most channels do not have a clip idea problem, they have a consistency problem.
The two are not exclusive. You can use the manual cut with the same publishing step that an agent would call. The Creator OS MCP server and the CLI hit the same API and the same workspace, so a post created by hand in the web app sits next to one an agent scheduled. If you want to see the agent end of it running, watch the walkthroughs on the KevBuildsApps YouTube channel, and the launch video for the shorter demos.
FAQ
Can Claude make short videos from a full YouTube video?
No. Claude can suggest which moments to clip and write captions for them, but the cut itself happens in a video editor. Creator OS does not ship a model, so the editing step is yours either way.
Can Claude read YouTube videos and pull the clips for you?
It can work from a transcript you give it, and it can suggest timestamps. It cannot pull the video file and cut clips on its own inside Creator OS. You export the clips and then publish them.
How do I upload YouTube Shorts without using an AI editor?
Cut the vertical clip in any editor, export an MP4, and upload it through Creator OS with creatoros posts:create targeting YouTube. A vertical video becomes a Short. You can schedule it, and the first comment posts and pins.
What is the YouTube quota and will it slow down Shorts publishing?
YouTube applies its own API quotas to every connected app, and Creator OS handles that on its side. For a normal Shorts cadence of a few posts a day, quota is not the thing that will stop you. If you hit an error at publish time, creatoros posts:retry resends it.
Do I need Claude reference prompts at all if I use Creator OS?
No. The CLI, the API, the iOS app and the web app do not need a model in the loop. The MCP server is there if you want it, and the publishing, scheduling, analytics and reply features work the same without it.
