A content posting API lets software publish to social platforms. An MCP server lets an AI app publish on your behalf by calling tools. A REST API lets your own code publish with HTTP requests. Pick the MCP server to have Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor run posting and replies. Pick the REST API for your own services, cron jobs and webhooks.
MCP server path
AI app -> https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp -> Creator OS
tools: create_post, reply_to_comment, send_message
REST API path
your code -> HTTPS request + cos_live_ key -> Creator OS
POST /v1/posts { content, platforms, media }
Both paths, same core:
one account, one workspace, same posting rules
per-platform options applied by Creator OS
missing_platforms comes back, the rest still sendMCP Server vs REST API for Posting: The Short Answer
Use the MCP server when the caller is a model, and the REST API when the caller is code you control.
That one sentence settles most of it. An MCP server exposes named tools, with descriptions and typed inputs, that an AI app discovers at connection time. The model decides which tool to call and what arguments to pass. A REST API exposes endpoints and field names that your program calls in a fixed order. The model never chooses anything.
Creator OS ships both, and they cover the same ground: 11 platforms plus Skool, a WordPress blog, a Shopify store and paid ads. The hosted server is at https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp. The REST API is documented at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs, including the base URL and the request shapes.
What Is a Content Posting API and How Do the Two Models Differ?
A content posting API is the interface that accepts a caption, media and a list of platforms, then handles each network’s rules and returns a result.
The two models differ in who assembles the request.
| Question | MCP server | REST API |
|---|---|---|
| Who calls it | An AI app (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex, Windsurf, VS Code) | Your application or script |
| How the call is shaped | The model picks a tool and fills arguments | You hard code the endpoint and fields |
| Setup cost | Paste one URL and sign in | Store a key, write request code |
| Repeatability | Prompt dependent | Deterministic |
| Best for | Conversation, one off campaigns, replies, analysis | Product backends, schedulers, pipelines |
Neither one is a wrapper that “just posts”. Both go through the same validation. Instagram needs a Business or Creator account. TikTok needs its consent flags and a privacy level. YouTube Shorts are vertical short videos. Creator OS applies those rules on both paths.
How Does an MCP Server Actually Post to Social Platforms?
The AI app reads the tool list when it connects, then calls a tool such as create_post with your caption and platforms; Creator OS does the publishing.
In Claude: Settings, Connectors, Add custom connector, paste https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp, sign in to Creator OS, choose the workspace, and pick read only or read & write. Each connection gets its own key under Settings, Connected apps. ChatGPT adds the same URL as a connector in developer mode. Claude Code uses one command:
claude mcp add --transport http creatoros \
https://mcp.creatoros.ca/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer cos_live_..."
Then a prompt is the program. Something like: “Post this clip to Instagram as a Reel and TikTok as a draft for my review, keep the caption under 2,000 characters, and add a first comment with the link.” The agent calls check_caption_length, uploads the file with upload_media_from_url, and calls create_post.
About 160 tools are exposed, covering posts, analytics, comments, DMs, automations, webhooks, Skool, Reddit, Discord, WhatsApp, Slack, Shopify, the blog, trackable links and ads. Destructive tools, such as deleting a post or disconnecting an account, are marked so the AI app asks first. Read only connections only see read tools, and the API refuses writes from them. The full list is at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/mcp.

When Should You Use a REST API for Posting?
Use the REST API when something other than a model decides what to publish: your product, a nightly job, a spreadsheet import, or a webhook handler.
The simple form takes a caption, platforms, media and a schedule:
{
"content": "New drop is live. Link in the first comment.",
"platforms": ["instagram", "tiktok", "youtube"],
"media": ["med_abc123"],
"schedule_at": "2026-03-04T14:00:00Z",
"timezone": "America/Toronto",
"draft": false
}
Upload once with POST /v1/media and reuse the returned med_ id on every platform. Three behaviors matter in production. Networks you listed but never connected come back in missing_platforms while the rest still publish. Errors arrive in one shape, { error: { code, message, status } }. Keys are pinned to one workspace, so an agent holding one client’s key cannot post to another client. The request details are at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/api/posts.
For bulk work, the CLI wraps the same API and reads a calendar file:
creatoros validate:post-length --text "Draft caption"
creatoros posts:bulk-upload --file calendar.json --dryRun
creatoros posts:bulk-upload --file calendar.json
Dry run first. Then commit. The CLI is documented at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/cli.
MCP Server vs REST API: Head-to-Head on Auth, Speed, and Control
Auth is the sharpest difference: the MCP server uses a per-connection key the AI app stores, and the REST API uses a cos_live_ key you keep secret.
- Auth. MCP connections are created through a sign in flow and show up as their own entries, so you can revoke one connector without touching the others. REST keys are created in Settings, API keys, and can be read only. Treat both like passwords. The authentication details are at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/authentication, and our write-up on key handling is at MCP server API key safety for social media.
- Speed. A REST call is one round trip. An MCP call is at least two, because the model reasons about which tool to use. For one post that is invisible. For 500 posts, the REST path with a loop is faster and cheaper in tokens.
- Control. REST gives you exact request bodies, retries and logging. MCP gives you intent level control: you write the goal, the model assembles the calls. On the command line,
creatoros ads:createtakes--validateOnlyto check a campaign before anything is spent, and the Claude Code plugin’s publish guard asks Proceed or Cancel before anything is published, spent or deleted.
Agency plans include a scoped API key per client workspace, which makes the REST path practical for multi client work.
How Do Threads Posting API, TikTok Posting API, and Instagram Posting API Fit In?
Platform posting APIs are what sit underneath both models, and Creator OS normalizes their differences so you do not write three implementations.
| Platform | What you must get right | What Creator OS handles |
|---|---|---|
| Business or Creator account, Reels vs feed vs Stories | Post type, covers, first comment, Trial Reels (1,000+ followers) | |
| TikTok | Privacy level, comment and duet consent flags | Fills the required flags, sends drafts to the TikTok inbox |
| Threads | 500 characters per post, 250 posts per 24 hours | Multi post threads, topic tag validation, first reply |
Concrete example: a vertical 40 second video with a caption. On Instagram it becomes a Reel with a custom cover. On TikTok it needs privacy_level and both consent flags, which the simple form fills for you, or you send draft: true to finish in the app. On Threads the same text may need splitting into a thread. One request covers all three. The per-platform post options behind this are listed at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/post-options.

What About a LinkedIn MCP Server, Threads MCP Server, or YouTube MCP Server?
You do not connect a separate server per platform; one Creator OS MCP connection covers LinkedIn, Threads, YouTube and the rest of the list.
People search for these names because each network has its own posting API with its own quirks, and they assume the server must be per platform too. It is one URL. After you connect, a single prompt can run across networks:
Post the launch announcement to LinkedIn as a company page post
with audience targeting, put the same text on Threads as a
three post thread with topic_tag "buildinpublic", and upload
the 90 second cut to YouTube as a Short with a pinned comment.
The agent picks create_post and fills the platform specific options. LinkedIn company pages use organizationUrn. Threads gets threadItems and topic_tag. YouTube gets a title, visibility and a pinned first comment. If LinkedIn refuses the write with a permission error, our write-up on the fix is at the LinkedIn API posting permission error guide. Company page posting is covered in posting to LinkedIn company pages with the API.
Can You Run Both an MCP Server and a REST API on the Same Account?
Yes. The MCP server and the REST API are two front doors to the same workspace, so you can schedule from code and reply from a chat window without duplicating anything.
A practical split for a small agency: a cron job calls the REST API every Monday with the week’s scheduled posts, while a Claude connection handles comment replies and DMs in the morning. Both see the same posts, the same analytics and the same inbox. Webhooks such as post.published and comment.received, signed with X-CreatorOS-Signature, let your own systems react to either path. Webhook setup is at https://www.creatoros.ca/docs/webhooks.
The one thing to keep straight is keys. A read only connector cannot write. A key is pinned to one workspace. If you give a contractor an MCP connection on an agency plan, connect that client’s workspace specifically, not the parent account.
If you want to see the agent harness pattern in action, the launch video walks through it: Creator OS launch video.
FAQ
MCP server vs REST API posting: which is better?
Neither is better in general. The MCP server is better when a model decides what to post or reply to, because the tools and their descriptions do the integration work. The REST API is better when your own code decides, because requests are deterministic and easy to retry and log. Many teams run both on the same workspace.
Can I use an MCP server for Instagram and TikTok at once?
Yes. One create_post call takes a list of platforms, so Instagram and TikTok go out from the same request, with each network’s rules applied. Instagram needs a Business or Creator account, and TikTok needs a privacy level plus its consent flags, which the simple post form fills for you.
What is a Threads MCP server?
It is an MCP connection that exposes Threads posting as tools an AI app can call: create a post or a multi post thread, set a topic tag, and add a first reply. In Creator OS it is part of the same connection as every other platform, so there is no separate Threads server to install. Threads allows 500 characters per post and 250 posts per 24 hours.
Is there a YouTube MCP server for posting?
Creator OS covers YouTube from its single hosted MCP server: long form uploads and Shorts, title and visibility, category, playlist, and a pinned first comment up to 10,000 characters. Vertical short videos become Shorts automatically. Custom thumbnails apply to long form only.
Do I need a REST API if I already use an MCP server?
Not for conversational work. Add the REST API when something automated and repeatable has to publish: a nightly job, a product backend, or a bulk calendar import. The API keys, the MCP server, the CLI and the agent skills are included in every plan, so adding the second path costs nothing extra.
