Instagram Trial Reels are Reels shown only to people who don’t follow you. Your followers never see a flop, and if the Reel does well, it can “graduate” to your profile and followers. You can post them through the Creator OS API, CLI or MCP server with one field, trialParams, which makes Trial Reels the cheapest A/B test on Instagram: an AI agent can post three hook variants as trials and promote the winner.
hook A --+ non-followers only
hook B --+-> Trial Reels ----> (followers never see it)
hook C --+ |

Upload the video once with POST /v1/media (you get a med_ id), then create the post with a per-account Instagram target and trialParams in its options:
POST /v1/posts
Authorization: Bearer cos_live_...
{
"content": "3 Claude prompts that replaced my social media manager",
"media": ["med_..."],
"platforms": [{
"platform": "instagram",
"account_id": "acc_...",
"options": {
"trialParams": { "graduationStrategy": "SS_PERFORMANCE" }
}
}]
}
The base URL and ready-to-copy cURL, JavaScript and Python are in the posts API reference.
graduationStrategy takes two values:
"MANUAL": the Reel stays a trial until you graduate it yourself in the Instagram app."SS_PERFORMANCE": Instagram graduates it automatically when it performs well with non-followers.
Everything else about a Reel still works: a custom cover, a firstComment, collaborators, the AI label and scheduling with schedule_at.
From Claude, without code
With the Instagram MCP server connected, just ask:
- “Post hook-a.mp4, hook-b.mp4 and hook-c.mp4 as Trial Reels, one every 2 hours from 10am, auto-graduate.”
- “In 48 hours, compare the three trials’ views and tell me which hook won.”
From the terminal, the CLI does the same with creatoros posts:create, see Claude Code for social media.
A hook-testing workflow that works
- One body, three openings. Edit the same video with three different first 2 seconds: a bold claim, a question, a visual surprise.
- Post all three as trials a couple of hours apart, auto-graduate on.
- Read the numbers after 24 to 48 hours: views, average watch time and shares per trial.
- Keep the winning pattern. Ask your AI to write next week’s hooks in the shape of the winner.
- Cross-post the winner to TikTok and YouTube Shorts, where you can’t run trials. See cross-posting short video.
Rules and limits
- Trial Reels are for Reels only: single videos, not carousels, feed images or Stories.
- The account must be a Business or Creator account, like all Instagram API publishing.
- Instagram decides eligibility; very new or small accounts may not have Trial Reels yet.
- Trial performance is measured on non-followers, so don’t compare a trial’s reach against a normal Reel’s directly.
